Whitecart Flood Prevention Scheme

Ritchie MacKenzie have been newly appointed as the mechanical and electrical contractor for the Whitecart Flood Prevention Scheme.

Ritmac will install six underground surface / storm water pumping stations with the job of alleviating the affect of flooding around the Whitecart Water, Glasgow.

The Whitecart Water rises in uplands south of Eaglesham. It flows north-west, initially through agricultural land, before entering Busby and Glasgow's south-eastern suburbs. Its 10km route through the city runs past a mix of commercial, industrial and residential areas.

It is a shallow, fast flowing river, prone to flash flooding, with 12 hours rainfall triggering a rise of up to 6 metres in water levels throughout the city. The few isolated flood defences, developed piecemeal, are inadequate. Numerous floods over the past 100 years have inflicted serious damage, with two events in 1984 inundating over 500 homes in Glasgow.

The pumping stations installed by Ritchie MacKenzie at various locations along the White Cart Water will play a major role in reducing the incidence of this kind flooding and ensure such events are never repeated.
